The town of Batley is situated in the kirklees metropolitan Borough in the county of West Yorkshire. Batley lies north of Dewsbury and is found near to the M62.

The name Batley is derived from Danish, meaning either valley or homestead of bats. In this case it is more likely to be homestead of the locally prominent Batte family. Batley is also recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Bateleia'

This park is large and sits between Batley town centre and Upper Batley. Within Wilton Park is a butterfly house; the Milner K. Ford Observatory as well as being home to Bagshaw museum.

The church that is present in Batley has been since the 11th century. The Batley Parish Church was built in the reign of Henry VI, and parts of the original remain. Despite Batley being an ancient settlement, this is all that remains of any great antiquity.
