Dealing with Heavy Boxes When Relocating
Picking up and relocating your life can be a draining experience both mentally and physically. On the physical side, here is how to deal with heavy boxes.

When preparing, you might overlook the need to plan for heavy boxes. The best way to deal with heavy boxes is to avoid them in the first place. However, when traveling long distances, it often becomes necessary to pack boxes as fully as possible.

The first step in dealing with heavy boxes is to make sure that they are secured well. You will want to use several layers of tape and secure them horizontally as well as vertically. You do not want the bottom of the box to fall out when you are attempting to transfer it. Mark the heavy boxes so that you position them in the bottom of the van or truck. You do not want to crush other boxes with the weight of the heavy ones.

Heavy boxes can be placed on a hand cart which will allow you to roll them into the room where they need to be. Most trucks come with a ramp, but you might need to set up a ramp at your new home if you have several stairs leading into your house. You can also pull the handcart up the stairs, but make sure that you have secured the boxes with straps before you attempt to lift the cart.

Team lifting can be a good way to deal with heavy boxes as well. Make sure that use the strength in your legs to move the boxes, and do not use your back. You should bend deeply at the knees, grasp the box, and lift straight up. When setting the box down, bend at the knees again and carefully place the box on the floor. If you have many heavy items, make sure that you take time to rest after a few boxes and be sure to drink plenty of water. One good idea is to place a large towel underneath the box before you start packing. Fold each side of the towel up and tape it along the side of the box. Once you arrive at your destination and the box has been carried inside, undo the tape. You can then use the towel to drag the box without having to lift it.

Many people decide to leave heavy boxes to the professionals. You can hire people whose job is simply to unload your truck. This will eliminate any difficulties you might have with heavy items. If you decide to go with a company, it is best to clearly label the boxes and walk the movers through the house prior to the start of unloading.
